8 - Reflection on the changes

Changes in my practice

My 32 Week Journey

As a second year teacher I had heard about the Mindlab Postgraduate program and this was something I knew I was going to take part in at some point during my teaching career. Little did I know, I would have completed the program in my third year.

It has definitely shaped my practice and I have been able to implement my new learning into my teaching without being set in another way. It has given me the chance to trial and explore new ways of teaching. I have become more reflective and use the experiential learning theory.

Practising Teachers Criteria

Over the course of the Mindlab program, all of the PTCs were meet and have supported my registration.

PTC 6 - Conceptualise, plan, and implement an appropriate learning programme.
How can e-learning support and extend what I am trying to achieve when planning programmes of work for groups and individuals?

E-learning has been a huge part of my teaching and has been incoorperated during the Mindlab journey. One in particular is Blendspace, I used Blendspace to support my mathematics program. I create a page that all students can access, I set a range of whole class activities and then group specific but all students are able to access these if they would like to see what other groups are doing or challenge themselves. Furthermore, this has helped with students taking responsibility for their learning.

PTC 7 -
Promote a collaborative, inclusive, and supportive learning environment.
How do I promote a collaborative, inclusive, and supportive learning environment that embraces e-learning and engages learners?

Collaborate is very important to my teaching. Not only with my team but also students and allowing them to collaborate with each other. I used Google Docs and have a shared folder with each student for them to share their work with me. I am able to comment and provide feedback. As a team share our planning and ideas with each other. I encourage a range of groups, ability and mixed and support them with including others.

In addition to my teaching role, I am also part the exchange program. I am in the process of reformatting documentation so that it is accessible to everyone and changes can be made.

‘Experiential learning theory maintains further that learning is a dialectic and cyclical process consisting of four stages: experience, observation and reflection, abstract reconceptualization, and experimentation (Koib, 1984). While experience is the basis for learning, learning cannot take place without reflection. Conversely, while reflection is essential to the process, reflection must be integrally linked with action.’

Where to now

I have thoroughly enjoyed the journey of Mindlab and I have a strong desire to continue with this learning. I can see how rapidly education is changing and believe we need to give teachers more time to explore these ideas.

I would like to continue to build on the inclusion of technology in the classroom and ensuring we are developing strong 21 century learners. I endeavor to include and continue to build on the use of technology in my teaching while encouraging my teaching team to work collaboratively using technology.
